By the time Fischig dies, Cherubael had lost a lot of his threat and the awe of fear he brought with him before. But especially the back and forth between Gregor and Cherubael just didn´t feel that interesting anymore. He struggled with his identity, his friends, his metaphorical and literal demons. I mean I get it, the focus lay on Gregor and his inner turmoil. The random Mercs they hired had been given way more character and details than the main villains of the whole novel. His daughter, this supposed powerful Psyker, dies like a chump after speaking three lines and never doing anything in the whole book. But Pontius Glaw - of whom we´ve seen such an awesome, detailed and layered description before - basically had three lines in the whole book that sounded more like "generic comic book villain" than anything we´ve seen before. I mean, I get it, a big part of the story was Eisenhorn finding out who exactly was behind this. I think what got me the most is how bland and boring and basically non-existent the main antagonists were. Am I crazy for thinking that? I know the novels have a great reputation - and rightfully so - but Hereticus felt really off at times. I´m not saying that it was bad by any means but I felt that it was definitely the weakest of the three novels I´ve read so far. I finished the third Eisenhorn novel yesterday, and I´m surprised that I did not enjoy it as much as I would have thought. Heavy Spoilers ahead of course, you´ve been warned!
