![]() ![]() As a singer, composer, and guitarist of considerable skills, Johnson produced some of the genre's best music and the ultimate blues legend. These recordings have not only entered the realm of blues standards ("Love in Vain," "Crossroads," "Sweet Home Chicago," "Stop Breaking Down"), but were adapted by rock & roll artists as diverse as the Rolling Stones, Steve Miller, Led Zeppelin, and Eric Clapton. ![]() ![]() Of course, his legend is immensely fortified by the fact that Johnson also left behind a small legacy of recordings that are considered the emotional apex of the music itself. If the blues has a truly mythic figure, one whose story hangs over the music the way Charlie Parker's does over jazz or Hank Williams' does over country, it's Robert Johnson, certainly the most celebrated figure in the history of the blues. ![]() ![]() Not every child is so fortunate, especially nowadays. The librarians I met at the Missouri River Regional Library in Jefferson City while reporting today’s cover story are keenly aware of how difficult it can be for some families to access their stacks. I mean I get it, the focus lay on Gregor and his inner turmoil. The random Mercs they hired had been given way more character and details than the main villains of the whole novel. His daughter, this supposed powerful Psyker, dies like a chump after speaking three lines and never doing anything in the whole book. But Pontius Glaw - of whom we´ve seen such an awesome, detailed and layered description before - basically had three lines in the whole book that sounded more like "generic comic book villain" than anything we´ve seen before. I mean, I get it, a big part of the story was Eisenhorn finding out who exactly was behind this. I think what got me the most is how bland and boring and basically non-existent the main antagonists were. Am I crazy for thinking that? I know the novels have a great reputation - and rightfully so - but Hereticus felt really off at times. However, you only have to look at the first few pages of the novel to see that it is really much broader in its criticism - so broad, in fact, it makes you wonder how it has managed to gain such huge popularity in Finland. The novel has been seen as a critique aimed at the ruling classes of Finland at the time. The novel seems to be the type of fiction which can communicate a kind of truth that historians can rarely achieve, and there seems to be good reason to use Linna's novel as way to really penetrate into the Finnish army at the time and get a deeper understanding of what went on. The huge popularity of Linna's novel in Finland seems to confirm this, and many men that fought in that war have been praising it for it's realism. I also noticed that Pipping, in his preface to one of the reprints, praises Linna's work and says that though it is a piece of fiction, it can serve entirely as a sociological study as well. ![]() ![]() Reading Knut Pipping's "Infantry Company as a Society" it struck me how close his observations of sociological and psychological mechanisms in the Finnish Army at the time are to the observations delivered by Väinö Linna in his famous novel "Unknown soldier". ![]() ![]() ![]() The book : Rare and very nice early edition with the dustjacket of this exquisite volume by Cicely Mary Barker. ![]() Illustrations : Profusely illustrated with 24 beautiful colour plates.
